The Journey to Transform Education in Namutere

When we first noticed a few children in the community not attending school, we had no idea how deeply God would open our eyes to the greater need. Initially, our response was simple: to address the frequent non-attendance of children in the community.

We asked ourselves, "Why, with free education provided by the government of Uganda, were so many children still not attending school?" Conversations with parents and guardians revealed the harsh reality: while tuition was free, families were required to provide uniforms and supplies—expenses many simply couldn’t afford.

In response, we began partnering with a few needy families, supplying uniforms and educational materials to help the children access school. Mobilizing support from friends and family, we collected extra supplies and distributed them to these children.

The Growing Realization

Despite these efforts, it became evident that attending school wasn’t enough. Learning was not happening.

Through evaluation, we discovered that the education provided was substandard. Even after years in school, many children struggled with basic arithmetic and grammar. This realization led us to introduce weekend coaching sessions to support the 52 children under our care.

Over time, it became clear we weren’t just addressing a surface problem but a systemic issue. A deeper solution was needed—an alternative education system that would genuinely equip the children in our community for success. We also recognized that quality education could be a key to community development and poverty alleviation.

Why Shalom Care School?

  • Limited Access to Quality Education: Many children, especially in rural Uganda, lack access to schools that offer high-quality education. While schools exist in the community often fail to provide effective teaching or a conducive learning environment.
  • Barriers of Poverty: Families struggle to afford basics like uniforms and supplies, keeping children out of school.

  • Distance to Schools: Long travel distances are a significant hurdle, especially for younger children.

Our Vision

The Shalom Care Primary School is an ambitious initiative designed to bridge this gap. Located in the Busia-Namutere region, it aims to:

  • Provide Accessibility: Build a modern school to make education accessible to marginalized communities.
  • Enhance Learning Outcomes: Improve literacy and numeracy rates through effective teaching methods.
  • Empower the Future: Foster community development by equipping the next generation of leaders with holistic skills to thrive.

A Holistic Approach

At Shalom Care School, we believe education is not just about academics but about nurturing the whole child—body, mind, and spirit.

Facilities and Resources

Our goal is to create a vibrant learning environment, incorporating:

  • Modern classrooms
  • Comprehensive learning resources
  • Exposure to technology and innovation

Call to Action

In 2017, we began a kindergarten and later a school that has been housed by our health center building over the years. We are ready to open the Community health center now and intend to give the school a home.

This year, 2024, we took a step of faith and began the construction of the school.

We believe every child is worth investing in because they are made in the image of God. With faith as our foundation, we’ve begun building a school to serve the children in our community. It’s a long journey—each stage challenging—but we trust that God will bring it to a victorious conclusion.

Join us in this journey.
Your prayers and contributions make all the difference.

Every contribution matters no matter how you think of it.

Together, we can transform lives through education and build a brighter future for the children in Namutere.

Consider giving before the year ends and lets make this happen.

Give today and be part of this life-changing mission.

A BRIGHT SPARK OF HOPE!!

Special Issue: From the Director's Desk.  When I took a team of five people at the beginning of 2024, I was simply doing what I love: bringing people alongside me . It’s almost the best way to tell the story of Shalom, because pictures alone don’t do us justice. This time, I want to share about Waswa (not his real name). After only a few days of Waswa’s involvement with the teachers at Shalom Care, I could see a bright spark of enthusiasm. But what came next was truly amazing. After our trip, he sent me a book that became a great encouragement for my work with the community. Here’s a portion of his letter: "‘Children of the Dust Bowl’ is a book I used to teach about the Great Depression of the 1930s. About halfway through the book, Leo Hart is introduced. He realizes that a large segment of his community is not receiving the education and healthcare they deserve. Instead of just complaining, he decides to do something about it. After our trip, I instantly saw you as a present...

“When Faith Builds Foundations: The Shalom Story Continues”

Shalom Care School Construction: Step by Step, by Faith.  This week, we joyfully resume construction at Shalom Care School after eight months of what I like to call “accumulating manna.” Yes— manna , God’s gracious provision for His people. Undeserved, yet faithfully supplied through generous donations.  Just like the children of Israel in the desert, we have continued to trust God for every single step . We have never once received a large capital donation that could complete an entire building at once. Instead, our journey has been one of steady faith—trusting God to provide, one step at a time. One thing we are sure of: the burden, though heavy, will be lifted by the Lord Himself . The One who owns all the gold, silver, and cattle on a thousand hills knows where the resources are and when to release them. Sometimes He provides in trickles; other times, He pours out blessings abundantly. Our part is to stay ready—to receive, to obey, and to move when He says, “Go.” As we...

Kyambogo University Mission Team: A Blessing to Shalom.

The Harvest is Plentiful!  This week, the Shalom Community Project, through the Shalom Community Church, has the joy of welcoming and hosting 70 students from Kyambogo University as part of their annual mission outreach, which will last for 7 days. In Uganda, university Christian Unions play a vital role in nurturing missional passion among young people. Each year, they identify communities where students engage in evangelism, door-to-door visits, discipleship, and public gospel proclamation. These activities are not only deeply rooted in Christian practice across Africa, but they are also key in shaping the next generation of Christian leaders. The energy and commitment we have witnessed in these Kyambogo students are truly inspiring. Their desire to serve, to share Christ, and to learn through hands-on ministry is a blessing to our community. As they interact with our ongoing development efforts at Shalom, they also gain a living picture of an  integral mission ...
